The Baby Sleep Book : The Complete Guide to a Good Night's Rest for the Whole Family (Sears Parenting Library)
Book DescriptionDESCRIPTION: America's favorite pediatric experts turn their attention to the hottest topic in parenting--solving babies' sleep problems--in a definitive book that offers immediate results. For every parent who's ever been deprived of sleep by a restless infant or toddler, now there's hope. This much-needed addition to the Sears Parenting Library is the comprehensive, reassuring, solution-filled sleep resource that virtually every American family will want to own. Nighttime separation anxiety, new breastfeeding habits, and an increase in adult sleep problems have made babies' sleep habits a growing concern in recent years. The Searses offer solutions. Instead of espousing the kind of "one-method-fits-all" approach advocated in other parenting books, the Searses teach parents how to match the nighttime temperament of their baby to their own lifestyle. The authors draw on important new infant sleep research from the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, as well ason their own personal experience as parents of children with a wide range of sleep habits. They also offer a detailed critique of the myriad new devices and ballyhooed techniques that promise to deliver safer and better infant sleep. THE BABY SLEEP BOOK provides parents with the practical tools they need to help the entire family sleep better....

Sleep related Breathing Disorders and Sleep Stages from ECG Signals
This book introduces a physiologically driven approach to detect sleep related breathing disorder events as well as different sleep stages by evaluating an ECG signal. The introductory chapters provide medical background knowledge concerning this sleep induced breathing failure and the ECG. On this basis, the following chapter discloses the connection between features extracted from the ECG and the occurrence of sleep related breathing disorder events or sleep stages. The features are derived from the heart rate and the morphological side effects of cardiac load fluctuations. In the subsequent chapters, the extracted features are evaluated by applying pattern recognition methods to answer the central question: Is it possible to reduce the diagnostic complexity of this disease by simply recording and processing an ECG signal? The assessment of the presented approach starts by selecting the most suitable classifiers. Subsequently, these classifiers are put to tests in patient dependent and independent scenarios. The achieved classification rates for the sleep related breathing disorder episodes as well as the sleep stages prove that an ECG driven basic diagnosis is feasible....

The Business of Sleep
While a number of world leaders may have claimed to be able to make do with five hours of sleep per night, for many people that little amount of sleep can – even in the short term – have serious and damaging side-effects. Major disasters have occurred as a result of poor sleep, from the destruction of the Challenger space shuttle to nuclear meltdowns such as Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, but more prevalent effects can include health disorders, the rise of depression and poor memory retention. For businesses and their employees, the impact can be incredibly detrimental – from the negative impact on decision-making and communication skills, to the stifling of creativity and innovation. The Business of Sleep delivers a serious business message: a lack of sleep will have an effect on your work and career. But the good news is that there are positive steps that can be taken. Drawing on both seminal and cutting-edge research, alongside interviews with notable CEOs and business influencers, sleep specialist Vicki Culpin offers an accessible guide to how sleep works, the consequences of poor sleep and the practical ways of mitigating against, and reducing the impact of, compromised sleep in organisational environments....
